This is one of two CORBELS - stone struts
supporting the ROOD SCREEN - a massive
platform bearing a Cross, a feature
of Roman Catholic worship in the era
before John Knox.
In 1559, Knox kindled the flames of
Reformation in Scotland here.
His Legacy?
The ROOD SCREEN disappeared.
More than 40 altars were swept away.
The High Altar became: the TABLE.
And preaching: a new emphasis on
teaching, learning, exploring the WORD
of GOD, took over from the pageantry of
the Mass.
