Kirk in sessionTHE KIRK OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST

The LAMP OF FAITH has burned here for nearly 800 years

Agnus Dei

For nearly 800 years St. John's has been a significant part of town life, always moving with the times, and with the rate of change increasing in recent decades. Change continues today - click here for Recent Developments - but we are first and foremost a congregation: a family of faith. Tradition holds us and nourishes us: it does not stifle us. In recent years, at the Service of Holy Communion, we have rung the changes and varied the Liturgy. The Table is open to all, including children.  Poetry and experiment have brought freshness to our worship.  Choir

Following our recent linking with St.Leonard's-in-the-Fields, apart from special Sundays such as Remembrance Sunday, we have one service only, at 9.30am, with Holy Communion on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month.  The choir sings an introit and an anthem - sometimes modern, sometimes traditional.  The organ music covers a wide range of composers and dates.  Recent translations of the Bible are used as well as older versions.

In their regular meetings, the members of the Kirk Session quietly perform the vital tasks of looking after the Kirk and its people. We are an ecumenical Congregation - and proud to be playing a small part in St. John's long history.

The Milestones of Life have been celebrated within the walls of the Kirk for hundreds of years, and are still today. The Rev David Ogston, who was Minister from 1980 to 2007, wrote on our approach to baptism, marriage and funerals:-  more here.

Sadly, Mr Ogston passed away in September 2008.

Although we are a living Church, we are, in part, shaped by the past life of St. John's and the events in the life of the broader church which took place here. Click on the right to see more.
